Adzuki beans are a diet staple in many parts of Asia and it’s easy to see why! They aid in weight loss, prevent and manage diabetes, optimize digestion, lower blood pressure, improve heart health, and detoxify the body, just to name a few.
These amazing and delicious red beans are often included often in sweet foods and even desserts, and can also find their way into savory dishes. Rich in folate, potassium, magnesium, and dietary fiber, adzuki beans help to balance cholesterol levels, relax blood vessels, and increase blood flow. This reduces blood pressure and strain on the heart, so it can help protect you from a heart attack and stroke by lower your chances of developing atherosclerosis.
What many people don’t know is that red adzuki bean is recommended in Chinese medicine for many women’s health issues. These beans are recommended during the final stage of pregnancy, postpartum, and also regularly throughout a woman’s life during menstruation. One common occurrence during all these times in a woman’s life is fluid retention, also known as edema. Edema can show up as swelling in the legs, especially, and other parts of the body as well. It can be uncomfortable and many women would love to know some simple ways to help this excess fluid out of the body so they can feel better.
Here I have for you one great and little-known way to do this — just make a delicious Red Adzuki Bean Drink! It has a diuretic effect, discharging excess fluid from the body (so that it does not turn into fat) and benefiting the heart. This drink can help circulation as well of course. I highly recommend it postpartum and during your period!
The amount in this recipe is your perfect daily intake, taking more than this per day can be hard on the digestion, so you can just keep it simple and use the suggested amount of ⅓ of a cup per day.
Red Adzuki Bean Drink Recipe
- ⅓ cup of red adzuki beans
- 1 bay leaf
- 2 cups water
- Dash of rice wine (for postpartum use)
- (You can also add some coriander or sweetener to taste! A small amount of brown sugar is good with this drink)
To make red adzuki bean drink:
Simply soak beans for 8 hours overnight. Just remember to put them in a bowl of water before bed and they’ll be ready in the morning!
Next, place beans, bay leaf, and water in a saucepan. Bring to a boil and skim of bubbles. Simmer for one hour or until beans are well-cooked.
Add seasoning or sweetener and blend in a blender. (Skim any bubbles off the top and discard)
You can just divide this up and drink it throughout the day, as well as double or triple the recipe if you want to make enough to spread out over a few days.
I hope you enjoy this delicious drink that brings the power of natural medicine to your female body or the body of a woman you love!
